Turkey condemns Israel’s recognition of Somaliland

(MENAFN) Türkiye has firmly opposed Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland as an independent entity, warning that the move endangers Somalia’s sovereignty and could undermine both regional and global stability.

Speaking during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Monday, Türkiye’s permanent representative Ahmet Yildiz said Israel’s action once again calls into question the foundations of the international system. He stressed that Ankara categorically rejects the announcement, describing it as incompatible with international law and the principles of the United Nations.

"Unilateral recognition of a region that is a part of a sovereign UN member state directly undermines principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and non-interference," he said.

Yildiz characterized the decision as part of a broader pattern of unlawful conduct by the Israeli government, arguing that such actions fuel instability beyond the immediate region and should not be treated as acceptable or routine.

He cautioned that the recognition “sets a dangerous precedent with far-reaching consequences,” warning that it threatens Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity while posing a direct risk to international peace and security. According to Yildiz, the move could also encourage fragmentation and instability, particularly in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region.

The Turkish envoy further said the decision amounts to interference in Somalia’s internal affairs, underscoring that choices about the country’s future must rest solely with its people. He emphasized that Türkiye’s stance on the issue remains unchanged.

Reaffirming Ankara’s position, Yildiz said Türkiye continues to offer “full and unwavering support for the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia over its entire territory.”

"We reject any measures aimed at undermining Somalia's unity or weakening its internationally recognized borders, as well as its focus and efforts to combat al-Shabaab terrorism, which we support," he added.

He also dismissed efforts to associate the recognition with wider political objectives, including "efforts aimed at the forcible displacement of the Palestinian people from their land."

Concluding his remarks, Yildiz called on the Security Council to fulfill its mandate under the UN Charter. He urged the body to respond decisively to actions that threaten the sovereignty of a UN member state and jeopardize international peace and security.
