Houthi rebels pledge to attack Israeli presence in region of Somaliland
In a statement on Sunday, Houthi leader Abdulmalik al-Houthi said Israel’s recognition amounts to “aggression against Somalia and Yemen, and a threat to the security of the region,” emphasizing that the group will “consider any Israeli presence in Somaliland a military target for our armed forces.”
The rebels, who have paused attacks on Israel since the Gaza ceasefire in October, framed the threat as a gesture of solidarity, accusing Israel of intending to carry out “hostile activities.”
The warning follows the signing of a declaration on Friday by Israeli officials recognizing Somaliland as a sovereign state, making Israel the first government to do so. Somaliland, located along the southern coast of the Gulf of Aden in East Africa, declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has remained largely unrecognized internationally.
Israel’s Prime Minister stated that the recognition aligns “in the spirit” of the Abraham Accords and extended an official invitation to Somaliland’s president.
Somalia’s government condemned the move as a “deliberate attack” on its sovereignty, and Israel’s decision has prompted widespread international criticism. Opposition comes from a coalition of countries and organizations, including regional powers and global bodies, all reaffirming support for Somalia’s territorial integrity. Reports indicate that US leadership has signaled no intention to follow Israel’s precedent at this time.
